The war waged by the Beast from the sea against the saints
Daniel 7:21: “As I looked, this horn made war with the saints and prevailed over them.”
Apocalypse 13:7: “It was given the power to wage war against the saints and to defeat them, and it was given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation.”
F. Peter John Olivi (d. 1298), O.F.M.: “Joachim [of Fiore] says that the beast [from the sea] will conquer them through false signs, demonic deception, and cunning words. Although in the time of the pagans the martyrs were killed, nevertheless, the error of idolatry, against which the martyrs fought, was so openly confused and vile, and the virtue and faith of the martyrs shone so clearly through miracles, that they visibly appeared as victors. However, the condemnation and passion of Christ were different, and it will be much more so in the suffering of the saints in the time of the great Antichrist and even in the mystical era.” 1
F. Peter John Olivi (d. 1298), O.F.M.: “And it is granted to him to make war against the saints and to conquer them, that is, to kill them bodily. Or, according to Joachim, it is said that he will conquer them because he will refute and mock the sound and catholic doctrine of the saints by cunning words and by a multitude of false signs and wonders, so that the whole world, believing in him, will protest and declare that the doctrine of the holy servants of God and Christ is false, and that the faith and doctrine of the Antichrist are true and catholic.” 2
